Project Description

FLOATING ROCK

A persistent rock carved by the Virgin River guards a bend in the Narrows.

Taking the first step into the Virgin River at the Mouth of the Narrows is akin to walking through a doorway to another world.  Hiking in thigh deep water, exploring serene scenes of rock and foliage around every corner, watching the canyon glow illuminate dark corridors, and spying an occasional deer or two frolic past the trees are just a few things that make the Zion Narrows my all time favorite hike.  What drew my eye to this scene was the juxtaposition between the darkness of the wall against which the rock sits and the subtle but brilliant glow around the river bend.  Shooting this image requires waiting in nearly waist deep water both for the occasional hiker to pass as well as for a long enough break in the breeze.  However surrounded by such beauty, patience seems more like a privilege than a chore.  I love the Narrows, there truly is nothing else like it.
