CERVIDAE SIESTA

Two mule deer lay down to rest after an evening of grazing near the Towers of the Virgin.

There are sunrise and sunset spots no matter where you go, iconic locations to where photographers undergo their twice-daily mecca during the golden hours.  Here the elements come together just to await that magical light.  Facing East, the Towers of the Virgin is typically known as the sunrise spot in Zion.  I have experienced this many times, watching the shadows from opposite cliffs slowly creep down the Towers as the sun ascends, but have never been fortunate enough to witness the sky on fire.  After a full day of scouting in the main canyon, I decided to spend an evening here knowing that it will likely be deserted with what appeared to blue skies overhead.  Alone, I watched as three mule deer slowly pick apart the grass then settle down for a rest.  Clouds lazily moved in as the light softened to create such a relaxing atmosphere.  Sometimes you need to ignore the notion of sunrise and sunset spots, and just go where your gut takes you.
